The Lion Inn

Winchcombe, Gloucestershire

A welcoming yet stylish take on the cotswold-pub-with-rooms formula, The Lion Inn is a Cotswolds inn that packs some pampering mod cons into its 500-year-old heritage-renovation, including a relaxed Modern British restaurant, rustic private dining and a gorgeous lavender-filled garden.

Clad in the region’s hallmark honey-stone and set in the heart of picture-perfect Winchcombe, this Cotswolds inn is the height of Cotswold charm but still has its roots firmly planted in the tradition of a hearty country inn. The endearingly wonky interiors may betray its age, but within the bedrooms and on the menus everything is brought right into the modern day with power showers and vintage-chic furnishings and a kitchen dishing out creative seasonal plates.

  • The picture-perfect English cottage garden.
  • The handpicked range of delicious English wines.
  • The antique shops and tearooms of Winchcombe right on your doorstep.
Things to Do

Focusing on the simpler things in life, the eight bedrooms are lovely places in which to relax. They are big, comfy and television-free, so you can easily disconnect and unwind. Nature plays a big role here with natural fabrics, fresh flowers and handmade Bramley toiletries packed with rich and rejuvenating natural ingredients included in every room. The Lion prides itself in preserving its 15th century heritage with each room sporting a unique historic quick, whether it be a restored Mickey Mouse mural, a wooden carousel horse propping up a corner or a fabulous hayloft conversion. Dogs are welcome too.

Restaurant & Bar

You won’t find any artificial ingredients here – with an ever-changing menu you can expect nothing less than the freshest seasonal ingredients. Sit down in the highly acclaimed restaurant and tuck into local favourites like the Pan-fried Partridge and Pigeon or try one of their delicious homemade pizzas for relaxing lunch. In summer, dining al fresco in the garden is a must where you can treat yourself to some tea and cake or choose from a selection of local ales, spirits and wines available from the well-stocked bar.

Private Dining

The Clubroom is a gorgeous light and airy space dressed with vintage wall features where dinner parties can linger over their bespoke menu washed down with one of the carefully chosen bottles of wine. In fact, if wine is your thing then the staff can even arrange wine tasting sessions for your party at a nearby vineyard. The patio makes it the perfect spot for an intimate garden party or summer wedding reception.

Country Pursuits

It may be difficult to tear yourself away from your gorgeous boutique room but for those of an adventurous nature, there’s plenty to explore. If you want to immerse yourself in a classic British sport then a day’s shooting can never miss. The Lion can arrange a clay pigeon shoot with nearby Prescott Shooting School, one of the best in the country.

Culture & Heritage

The Lion’s village-center location is hard to beat for its classic Cotwolds charm but our top pick during your stay is the beautiful Sudeley Castle on the town’s outskirts. The grand halls, rooms and romantic gardens are steeped in history and is even the final resting place of a Queen of England.
